Colorful Lanterns and Banners on Nanjing Road, Shanghai, China Yum Yum Dim Sum! Dim Sum means “light eating, or small meals” in Cantonese. At Seattle’s House of Hong Restaurant in the International District, preschoolers can actively choose from a wide variety of authentic and unusual Chinese Dim Sum cuisine at this busy Seattle family-friendly favorite!

What Your Preschooler Will Enjoy at  House of Hong

The Exotic Food
Expect squiggles and giggles from your preschooler, as this food is a bit unusual and exotic- but tastes wonderful. Dim Sum foods are wheeled to the table on carts in tiny little food steamers that look like baby ovens!

Shark, Squid, Taro, Chicken Feet and Duck!
These are adventurous choices for a preschooler, and that’s half the fun! The food is so unique; you will have fun guessing at what you are choosing (try the shrimp toast and steamed buns). Sticky rice and noodles are always staples and there’s plenty to go around.

The Oriental Décor
Have you ever been to China? Your preschooler will delight in the authenticity of House of Hong’s surroundings. Traditional colors, music, wait staff, chopsticks, decorations, and even a small gift store will sprinkle a bit of China onto your plates.

Aquarium Tanks
Take a look at the big aquarium tanks that hold live lobster and crab. On the stage is a large Oriental dragon that may come alive during your meal!

What Parents Will Enjoy About the House of Hong

Seafood Rice There are no “small” meals! The colorful parade of foods will keep your family entertained with enough variety to please even a preschooler's picky tastes! Expect quick, but busy service. The restaurant is very large, so tables are spread out leaving ample room to move. High chairs, booths and large family-style tables are available (restrooms rate a B+).

Dim Sum prices are not listed on the menu. Check their website for cost, and also to see wonderful pictures of their food. Note- asking wait staff can be challenging due to the thickness of accent (it adds to the ambiance).

When is the best time to go? During the week before 2:00 is the best time for more food choices, as the fresh Dim Sum service stops at 4:30. If you go after 2:30, not all fresh dishes are available.

Preschooler Activities at House of Hong

For wait times:
Sweet, spicy, salty, fried, baked and steamed are all words to talk about with your preschooler during wait times. Guessing at what could be in the dishes is a lot of fun and another way to keep the interest peaked until food arrives.

After your meal:
Go for a walk in the International District and introduce your preschooler to the many colors, flavors, language and other Chinese sites to see. Stop by the Uwajimaya grocery store for a peak at some of the ingredients in your meal; maybe take a few home to try yourself! (Asian recipes)
