Fall Hiking in Marymoor Park
by Pam Koons
The Eastside’s Marymoor Park is one of King County’s most favorite parks for beautiful fall hiking with your preschooler. Bundle up and do some seasonal bird watching, cruise the off-leash dog park, and play on the two colorful playgrounds, as your preschooler enjoys fall hiking through Marymoor Park.
What Preschoolers will Like about Marymoor Park
During the fall, Marymoor Park features easily accessible wetland boardwalks for your preschooler to view many different species of birds: loons, eagles, falcons, kingfishers, herons, owls, woodpeckers, pigeons, and Canadian geese to name a few. (map of park)
A fall visit to Marymoor Park would not be complete without playing on the climbing equipment in either of the park's two playgrounds. Several bathrooms and picnic tables are scattered throughout the park. A short hike takes your preschooler to watch climbers scale Marymoor Park’s rock climbing wall and Washington’s only Velodrome, a large cyclist track.
Inside Marymoor Park, your family dogs can also celebrate fall hiking at one of the state’s nicest and largest off-leash dog parks. Cedar chips line the wilderness dog trails, and doggie poop scoop bags are provided. Give a dog a bone and get a cup of coffee at the snack van which provides hot drinks and doggie treats in the parking lot. (dog park map)
A special feature at Marymoor is an Air Park run by the Marymoor Radio Controlled Model Airplane Club. Your preschooler can watch a variety of model airplanes, helicopters, bombers and jets take-off and land, while enjoying a picnic lunch at the shelter.
What Parents will Like about Marymoor Park
The fall hikes in Marymoor Park are very level and easy for preschoolers, and all are within fairly close reach of the restrooms. There are also ample grassy meadows for your preschooler to run off some of that pent-up fall energy.
